The City of Buenos Aires participated with the “Pasate a LED” program in the meetings with the WEF, where important contacts with strategic stakeholders were made.

After more than a year of meetings with the World Economic Forum (WEF), the organization published the document ‘Urban Transformation: Integrated Energy Solutions’. In it, the City of Buenos Aires was included as one of the case studies within the category of Public Commitment for an inclusive transition with the ‘Pasate a LED’ program, implemented in 2019.

The report mentions the actions carried out by the City, which included the distribution of one million LED lights, reaching almost 225,000 homes. An estimated 100 gigawatts were saved, avoiding the emission of 47,432 tons of carbon dioxide (tCO2eq). Furthermore, the document explained how the programme not only consisted of distributing the new luminaires, but also provided information about energy efficiency and climate change. In addition, the light bulbs that the neighbors gave in exchange for the LEDs, were recycled and reused to pave the streets of Buenos Aires.

The addition of Buenos Aires in this document allowed to establish important connections with key stakeholders that work in climate action initiatives internationally, and also portrayed how working collaboratively with citizens is key in the implementation of policies to mitigate climate change.

Also, the file highlights that inclusive transitions to more sustainable cities require clear and transparent communication through large educational campaigns in order to encourage citizens to collaborate with climate actions based on information and the generation of trust, thus showing the population that their participation is not only desirable if not necessary.
