Buenos Aires, recognized for its sustainability

The City was awarded for the management and handling of solid waste (2014, 2015 and 2020), for the Recycling Center (2017 and 2020), for the circular economy (2015) and also for the LED lights (2015 and 2016).

Since 2013 the city ​​of Buenos Aires has been internationally recognized for its permanent work towards a quality and sustainable public space to have an increasingly green City. Learn about the awards that recognize Buenos Aires as an increasingly sustainable city, such as the management and handling of solid waste in 2014, 2015 and 2020, the Recycling Center in 2017 and 2020, the circular economy in 2015 and LED luminaires in 2015 and 2016. 2020

Sustainable Leadership Award from the Argentine - British Chamber of Commerce

The City of Buenos Aires - through the Ministry of Public Space and Urban Hygiene - was the winner of the Sustainable Leadership Award granted by the Argentine-British Chamber of Commerce (CCAB), for its Comprehensive Management of Urban Solid Waste. The implementation of measures aimed at reducing waste generation, transforming waste into resources and promoting the importance of citizen participation were the reasons that led the Argentine-British Chamber of Commerce to choose Buenos Aires within the Public Sector category for its comprehensive plan.

Winner in Latin America Green Awards

The City's Recycling Center was the winner in the Solid Waste Management7 category of the Latin America Green Awards. For its part, the Global Citizenship project, developed by the Ministry of Education of the City, was chosen to be part of the 500 best socio-environmental projects in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Solid Waste Management category recognizes projects that develop processes to reduce, eliminate and / or properly manage their solid waste.

Winner of the Wellbeing Cities Award for sustainable mobility policy

The City's sustainable mobility policy and the free public bicycle system, Ecobici , were winners in the Urban Health Planning category of the Wellbeing Cities Award, organized by NewCities. The Wellbeing Cities Award recognizes the efforts of cities that are transforming urban life by investing in public health, strong communities, a prosperous and sustainable environment, and the local economy, within a comprehensive planning and policy-making approach that prioritizes well-being.

2019

500 best socio-environmental projects in Latin America and the Caribbean

The Urban Ecological Corridors project was chosen to be part of the 500 best socio-environmental projects in Latin America and the Caribbean by the Latin America Green Awards. The Sustainable Cities category recognizes projects that involve the construction of greener cities: sustainable mobility, green building, ecotourism, carbon neutrality, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, creation of parks that connect the urban area with the community, among another 100 most outstanding projects in sustainability at a global level.

2017

C40 Awards

In December 2017, Buenos Aires was selected as one of the finalist cities for the C40 Cities Award, for its zero waste policy , through the Recycling Center. The new City Recycling Center, located in the Villa Soldati venue, is the first in the country that brings together four waste treatment plants and also functions as an educational center. It includes a PET bottle treatment plant, another plant that treats organic material and a last one that reuses the pruning and forestry waste of the green spaces. These plants complement the aggregate treatment plant, which has been in operation on the site since 2013 and, since then, has treated part of the 6,000 daily tons of waste generated today in the City.

World Smart Cities Award

The City of Buenos Aires won the seventh edition of the World Smart City award, in the "Project" category. The award recognizes the Cuidemos los Alimentos program (Food care program) , carried out by the Under-secretariat of International and Institutional Relations, which aims to create a sustainable food system for the City , with a first axis of work on reducing waste and promoting responsible food consumption .

International Transport Forum Awards

The Metrobus 9 de Julio project carried out by the Ministry of Transport was chosen among different projects from 57 countries, as the "Greatest Transport Achievement" . Inaugurated in mid-2013, Metrobus 9 de Julio changed mobility in the center of the City of Buenos Aires. With 3 km of extension on the widest avenue in the world, it allows the 255,000 users of public transport to save more than 50% of travel time.

2016

The LED Luminaires project, carried out by the Under-secretariat of Public Space Maintenance of the Government of the City of Buenos Aires, has been the winner in the category of best national project to compete in the International instance. The energy efficiency plan for public lighting with remote-managed LED technology has been being implemented since 2013. LED technology not only allows significant energy savings, but also provides greater safety to citizens, since the power of LED light is higher compared to traditional sodium lamps.

3rd Annual Awards for Excellence in Sustainability

The New Government Headquarters was awarded under the category Sustainable Construction Project by the American Planning Association. It was awarded for being an individual construction project of green and sustainable principles, used both in its construction and operation. The recognition seeks to reward those innovative leading projects, with a sustainable integration approach and compatible with the objective of planning and general development of the neighborhood, the community and the environment.

2015

Ibero-American Award for Digital Cities AHCIET

The LED Luminaires project , carried out by the Under-secretariat of Public Space Maintenance of the Government of the City of Buenos Aires, has been the winner in the category of Environmental Management of energy, responsible management of Waste and Water . Circular Economy Awards - The Circular Economy Awards

The Comprehensive Solid Waste Management Plan executed by the Government of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires was recognized and published as an outstanding project in the first edition of the Circular Economy Awards “The Circulars”. This initiative is carried out by the Young Global Leaders (YGL) of the World Economic Forum in collaboration with Accenture.

The Government of the City of Buenos Aires was a finalist in the Transport category of the C40 Award 2015 for its Metrobus project . A transport system that combines articulated and traditional buses with exclusive lanes. Decreasing travel times, providing predictability, comfort and improvements in the quality of the environment.

2014

C40 & Siemens City Climate Leadership Awards

The City Government's Comprehensive Urban Solid Waste Management Plan was the winner in the Urban Solid Waste category of the C40 Cities' City Climate Leadership Awards, which recognizes cities for their leadership in tackling climate change. This project is helping to improve street cleaning, save energy, foster citizen engagement and participation in the separation of waste at source, and create jobs.

Garden Excellence Award

The Palermo Rose Garden (Rosedal de Palermo) was awarded with the Garden Excellence Award, an international recognition granted by the World Federation of Rose Societies (WFRS). The Garden Excellence Award is a distinction received by rose gardens worldwide for their beauty, history and educational value, and the Rosedal de Palermo is the first in South America to win this award. The nomination for this distinction was made by the Argentine Association of Rosiculture and had the endorsement of the Botanical Garden of Buenos Aires and the World Federation of Rose Societies, an organization that Argentina integrates along with 39 other countries.

2013

Sustainable Transport Award

The City Government's Sustainable Mobility Plan won the Sustainable Mobility Award, awarded annually by the Institute for Transport & Development Policy to recognize cities with a strong vision and sustainable strategy to improve citizen mobility. The Plan includes the Metrobus network, the Eco Bici system and encourages pedestrian priority in Buenos Aires downtown (Microcentro), with the pedestrian area.

C40 Citizens Choice Awards

In recognition of its leadership in combating climate change, Buenos Aires was chosen by the public among 19 cities for the C40 Citizens Choice Award. The [Sustainable Mobility] Plan was especially highlighted as an innovative, sustainable and replicable model.
