Wetlands are a great refuge for wildlife and a source of fresh water. They are fundamental environments for the ecosystem. For its preservation, the Ministry of Public Space and Urban Hygiene](/espaciopublicoehigieneurbana) works every day on cleaning and differentiated waste collection on the coastal edge of the Riachuelo and Río de la Plata. Every day, it collects more than half a ton of garbage in a total of 738,000 m2.

It also cleans the water mirrors of the Cildañez, Riachuelo, Rodrigo Bueno, Ugarteche, Maldonado, Medrano and Raggio streams that flow into the Río de la Plata. A photo gallery and video show how this is done.

”Wetlands are an essential part of our ecosystem, from the City, we work daily to clean the coastal edge of the Riachuelo and Río de La Plata rivers in order to preserve the great biological diversity that regulates the water and climate cycle. This is a fundamental task that is not seen and that we also take care of ”, expressed the Minister of Public Space and Urban Hygiene, Clara Muzzio.

On the coastal edge of the Riachuelo, specifically in the renowned Vuelta de Rocha, the maintenance of this water mirror is carried out by means of a catamaran-type sweeping equipment. In addition, the care of public spaces is carried out from La Boca to Puente La Noria. The main sectors are the stretch of the former Villa 26 (Slum 26), the area of Puente Victorino de la Plaza, the sector of the former Magaldi settlement, the contour of Villa 21-24 (Slum 21-24), the area of Puente Alsina, former El Pueblito settlement and the slope from Avenida 27 de Febrero. These actions allowed the public cleaning service to be carried out for the first time to sectors of 21/24 and 26 slums, and also recovered 11 kilometers of coastline on the banks of the Río de la Plata.

In April 2019, a control point was established on the coastal edge of the meander in the 21-24 slum that guarantees a better provision of the cleaning service in this space that is of high generation and dumping of waste.

The cleaning of the edge of the Río de la Plata ranges from the former Sports City of Boca to the city limit with the municipality of Vicente López (excluding the port area). The main sectors are the edge of the South Ecological Reserve, the area of Costa Salguero and Punta Carrasco, the Costanera Norte, the Fishermen's Club sector and the surroundings of the Christopher Columbus monument, the area of the Extreme Sports Park and the coastline of the North Ecological Reserve. Operational teams specialized in cleaning, differentiated waste collection, disinfection and sustainable care of public spaces are deployed on both coastal edges, which allows obtaining high standards of cleaning without affecting nature and improving the environmental quality of the coasts.

All recyclable materials recovered are taken to a Green Center.

In addition to the personnel trained for this activity, there is also an important equipment consisting of cargo vessels (The Keepership and Elefante V) and transport and control vessels (Elefante III and Eco Rio), hydro-washing units, trucks, bobcats and electric cars. In this way, a multipurpose team is formed, ready to carry out tasks at all sites under any circumstance and on a permanent basis. Essential to preserve the wetlands.
